The 5 Stages of Pregnanacy:

For Yoga, Ayurveda and Mindfulness….

  • The Sanskrit term for the Pre-Pregnancy Period is Garbha Āśraya (गर्भ आश्रय). It literally translates to "pre-conception state" or "pre-pregnancy condition" in English. It marks the initiation of the journey toward parenthood.

Garbha Āśraya calls for yoga and mindfulness to serve as valuable tools for women and couples to prepare physically, mentally, and emotionally for the transformative experience of pregnancy and parenthood, promoting overall health and well-being every step of the way.

  • The Sanskrit term for the first trimester of pregnancy is "Garbha Nirūpaṇa" (गर्भ निरूपण). This term specifically refers to the conception or fertilization of the embryo, which marks the beginning of pregnancy.

During the first trimester of pregnancy, yoga philosophy emphasizes the importance of adapting one's yoga practice and mindfulness approach to accommodate the unique needs and changes experienced by both the mother and the developing baby. Garbha Nirūpaṇa calls for individuals to practice yoga, ayurveda and mindfulness with awareness, compassion, and connection. Women can cultivate a sense of inner strength and resilience as they embrace the journey of pregnancy.

  • The Sanskrit term for the second trimester of pregnancy is "Garbhopagaṭi" (गर्भोपगाति).

During the second trimester of pregnancy, yoga philosophy continues to emphasize the importance of adapting one's practice to support the changing needs of both the mother and the growing fetus. By practicing with mindfulness, awareness, and compassion, women can navigate the joys and challenges of pregnancy with grace and resilience.

  • The Sanskrit term for "the final stage of pregnancy, nearing full term" is "Garbha Pūrṇāvasthā" (गर्भ पूर्णावस्था).

During the third trimester of pregnancy, yoga philosophy emphasizes the importance of gentle, nurturing practices that support the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of both the mother and the growing baby.

  • The Sanskrit term for the Postpartum period, or the period following childbirth, is "Sutikākāla" (सूतिकाकाल).

Yoga philosophy recognizes the postpartum period as a sacred and transformative time for new mothers, focusing on nurturing the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of both the mother and her newborn. The relationship between pregnancy, yoga, and mindfulness during Sutikākāla.
