Is It Normal to Be Scared of Giving Birth? (+How to Overcome Birth Anxiety)
If you're pregnant and terrified of giving birth, I need you to know something right away:
You are not alone. And you are not broken.
Birth anxiety affects up to 80% of expectant mothers. Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, feeling scared about labor is completely normal.
As a doula and mother of eight serving families in Central Texas, I've supported countless women who started their pregnancies feeling terrified and ended up having empowering, positive birth experiences.
The difference? They learned how to work with their fear instead of fighting against it.
In this post, I'm sharing exactly why birth anxiety happens, why it's so common, and—most importantly—7 proven strategies to help you move from terrified to confident.
Why Am I So Scared of Giving Birth?
Birth anxiety usually stems from one or more of these sources:
Fear of the Unknown If you've never given birth before, your brain has nothing to reference. This uncertainty can trigger anxiety.
Fear of Pain Let's be honest—you've probably heard horror stories about labor pain. These stories stick in your mind and create fear.
Fear of Loss of Control Birth is unpredictable. For people who like to plan and control
situations, this uncertainty is deeply uncomfortable.
Previous Trauma If you had a difficult previous birth, experienced medical trauma, or have a history of abuse, these experiences can intensify birth anxiety.
Media Portrayals Movies and TV shows often depict birth as chaotic, painful, and terrifying. These images shape our expectations.
Lack of Support If you don't feel confident in your care provider or support system, anxiety naturally increases.
The Problem with Birth Anxiety (The Fear-Tension-Pain Cycle)
Here's why addressing birth anxiety matters:
When you're scared, your body goes into "fight or flight" mode:
Your muscles tense up
Blood flow to your uterus decreases
Your cervix tightens
Contractions become more painful
This creates a vicious cycle:
Fear → Tension → More Pain → More Fear
Breaking this cycle is KEY to having a smoother, more manageable labor.
7 Proven Ways to Overcome Birth Anxiety
1. Educate Yourself (But Choose Your Sources Wisely)
Knowledge is power—but not all information is helpful.
Do:
Take a comprehensive childbirth education class
Read positive birth stories
Learn about the stages of labor and what to expect
Understand your pain management options
Don't:
Scroll through horror stories on forums
Ask everyone you meet about their birth
Google every symptom at 2am
Action step: Focus on learning from trusted, evidence-based sources.
2. Practice Daily Affirmations
Your brain believes what you tell it repeatedly.
Try these affirmations:
"My body is designed to birth my baby."
"I trust my body's wisdom."
"Each contraction brings me closer to meeting my baby."
"I release fear and welcome confidence."
"Women have been doing this for thousands of years. I can too."
Action step: Write your favorite affirmations on sticky notes and put them where you'll see them
daily.
3. Use Breathwork to Calm Your Nervous System
When anxiety hits, your breath is your fastest tool for calming down.
Try the 4-7-8 Breath:
Breathe in for 4 counts
Hold for 7 counts
Exhale for 8 counts
Repeat 4-5 times
This instantly activates your "rest and digest" nervous system response.
Action step: Practice this breath every time you feel anxious about birth.
4. Visualize a Positive Birth Experience
What you focus on expands.
Daily Visualization Practice:
Close your eyes and take three deep breaths
Visualize your labor unfolding smoothly
See yourself breathing calmly through contractions
Imagine feeling strong, supported, and capable
Picture the moment you meet your baby
Action step: Spend 5 minutes each evening visualizing your ideal birth.
5. Address Specific Fears Head-On
Write down your specific fears, then address each one logically.
Example:
Fear: "What if the pain is unbearable?"
Reality check:
You have multiple pain management options available
Your body produces natural endorphins during labor
You can change your mind about pain relief at any time
Breathing, movement, and support significantly reduce pain perception
Action step: Make a list of your top 3 birth fears and research each one objectively.
6. Build a Strong Support Team
Having the right support reduces anxiety significantly.
Your support team might include:
A birth partner who understands your wishes
A doula who provides continuous physical and emotional support
A care provider you trust completely
Friends or family members who encourage you
Action step: Identify who will be part of your birth team and have honest conversations about your fears and needs.
7. Consider Therapy or Counseling
If your birth anxiety is severe or related to past trauma, professional support can be incredibly helpful.
Signs you might benefit from therapy:
Panic attacks when thinking about birth
Intrusive thoughts about birth going wrong
Anxiety that interferes with daily life
History of trauma that's being triggered
Action step: Ask your provider for a referral to a perinatal mental health specialist.
What Helped Me Overcome Birth Fear (A Personal Note)
As a mother of eight, I've experienced the full spectrum of birth emotions—including fear.
What helped me most was:
Learning that I had more control than I thought
Practicing breathing and meditation daily
Surrounding myself with positive, supportive people
Reframing contractions as "my body working perfectly"
Trusting that my body was designed for this
You don't have to be fearless. But you can be brave. And that's more than enough.
Conclusion:
Birth anxiety is normal, common, and—most importantly—something you can work through.
You don't have to eliminate fear completely. You just need tools to manage it so it doesn't control your experience.
You are stronger than you realize, mama. And you've got this.
